COURSE DESCRIPTION: Becoming Physically Educated (BPE) is a required course for graduation. This course is designed to help students understand why exercise and fitness are important in developing a healthy and active lifestyle. The course will emphasize successful strategies for maintaining good cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and body composition. It will follow a conceptual approach dealing with the following topics: the nature of fitness, assessing individual fitness, developing and maintaining a life-long fitness program and developing an appreciation for efficient movement by viewing it as both an art and science.


KEY STANDARDS:

Standard 1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Standard 3. Participates regularly in physical activity.

Standard 4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard 5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Standard 6. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and /or social interaction.

25% Fitness Test & Portfolio
15% Chapter Tests
20% Participation
10% Dressing Out
10% Classwork/Writing Assignments/Notebook
20% Final Exam (mile run and written exam)

               


GRADING SCALE:
A - 100-90%
B - 89-80%
C - 79-74%
D – 70-73%
F - 69-Below


SYNERGY ACCESS TO GRADES:  

It is strongly encouraged that you keep your Synergy login information in a safe place and that you have access to the information when needed.  Parents should contact the Main Office (770.819.2521) or Mr. John Chandler at ext. 099 in order to obtain their synergy password and access information.

Please note that when you are viewing grades in Synergy that a blank grade column for your child has no effect on their grade.  If the space is blank, then your student may not have turned in that assignment due to absence or the teacher may not have entered grades for that assignment at that time.  An “X” means that the student is exempt from an assignment at the discretion of the teacher.


TEXTBOOK/SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCES:
There will be a classroom set of textbooks. If you desire your own book, please see Mr. Tommy Perry to have one checked out to you.


GENERAL INFORMATION:

Personal Fitness Dress:
The following policy outlines the standards of dress for all PHS Physical Education classes. The Cobb County School District Student Dress code will be enforced.

1. Athletic shorts or sweat pants which must be worn with the waistband at or above the hips. NO LEGGINGS or SPANDEX SHORTS.
2. Tennis shoes and socks. Shoes must have the appropriate flat bottom sole. Shoes that mark the gym floors are not allowed.
3. No hats or bandannas will be worn in class.
4. “Spaghetti” strap shirts, “tube” tops or tops without one or both shoulders, tops or bottoms that leave any abdominal, back or midriff skin exposed, tops or bottoms that do not completely cover undergarments, coats and headwear including stocking caps and bandanas.

Medical Policy:

If the student has a medical condition, a Physician’s statement/note is required when a student needs to modify his/her participation due to medical reasons. These are the ONLY notes that will be honored. Notes need to outline when the student can return to participation and what type of physical activity can be completed during the time he/she is under medical care.

Short Term Medical – a written medical report abstract needs to be obtained from me. The report will detail information on what replacement activities or work is needed to receive credit / grade for the days missed due to the medical condition.

Extended Medical – may jeopardize credits needed for graduation and need to be handled through myself, student’s counselor, and physician recommendations.


MATERIALS NEEDED:

- Appropriate clothing for dressing out.
- Personal hygiene items (deodorant, baby wipes, etc.)
- School supplies: paper, binder or notebook, pencil, pen.


DONATION REQUEST:  Any donation of fitness equipment such as dumbbells, stationary bikes, treadmills, weight benches, resistance bands, etc. will be appreciated.


CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Come to class on time and bring necessary materials (notebook, pen, pencil, paper)

  1. No food, drinks, gum, or candy allowed in the classroom. WATER ONLY!!!

  1. DO NOT TALK while others are talking, especially when I’m talking!!!

  1. Respect yourself and others.

  1. If it is not yours, DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!!

  1. Don’t touch the computers, dry erase boards, overhead projector, T.V./DVD player, or any equipment for that matter without permission.

  1. DO NOT sit at my desk, at my work table, on my stool, or on the desk tops..

  1. DO NOT spit in the trash can.

  1. DO NOT take HEALTH AND PERSONAL FITNESS BOOKS out of the classroom, you will be responsible for the book that is assigned to you during class time.

  1. If you do not dress out YOU WILL NOT sit down and do nothing, you will be required to walk the entire time.

  1. A written Physician note is required for exemption from workouts due to illness or injuries outlining specific restrictions.

  1. Having an electronic device out any time during a test/exam/quiz will result in an automatic zero.


FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION:
Students with no more than one excused absence may qualify to exempt one of their final exams.  Students with a course average of 80 or higher may exempt one final exam of their choice.  Students with a course average of 79 or below may request that ten percentage points be added to the final exam grade.  Towards the end of the semester, students who qualify may submit an Exam Exemption Form to the classroom teacher of their choice.  Teachers must verify that the student qualifies for the exemption.


PARTICIPATION:
Class participation is an important component of the Personal Fitness curriculum. Frequent absences, not dressing out, and non-participation SERIOUSLY jeopardizes your chances of success in this class. The participation grade will be based on student involvement in the learning activities and fully engaging in the activities/exercises, class discussions, and being prepared for class.

ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY:
***ABSENCE – ONLY AN EXCUSED ABSENCE GRANTS YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE UP THE MISSED WORK!!!

 It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to make-up all written and skill tests. Absences including field trips, visitations, sickness, pre-arranged meetings need to be made up to receive credit. Work needs to be made up within a week of the absence.

LATE WORK POLICY: 
I DO NOT accept late work! It is your academic duty/responsibility to meet all deadlines/due dates.


TARDY POLICY:  
To avoid being counted tardy, students must be seated and ready for class when the bell rings.  School policy states that students may receive Saturday School, In-School Suspension, and Out-of-School Suspension for repeated tardies. 


EXTRA HELP: 

Morning Session: Monday-Friday from 7:40-8:15.                                                    
Afternoon Session: By appointment only; may receive help from with another teacher in the dept.


CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES:
 As per the school’s policy, cell phones are not to be used during class time unless directed by the teacher for instructional purposes. Students will receive a discipline referral after one warning to put away any electronic device (unless the device is being used for instruction). Students are allowed to bring certain technologies to class (iPad, laptop, Kindle, etc.), but it should NOT interfere with the teaching or other’s learning.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Cheating is considered a serious matter.  Any student who is involved in cheating/plagiarism will receive a grade of zero on the material, an unsatisfactory in conduct, and his/her parents will be notified.

For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:

  • Copying anyone's answers to questions, exercises, study guides, class work or homework assignments
  • Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words and/or changing some words as written by the author and claiming the work as his or her own, i.e., plagiarism.
  • Looking onto another student's paper during a test or quiz.
  • Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher's permission.
  • Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected.

CLASSROOM BLOG:
Throughout the year, students are expected to use the classroom blog daily. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the blog and come prepared to the next class. All handouts and assignments will be posted daily to the blog.

Thursday: Ch. 1 vocabulary; Ch. 1 lessons 1 & 2 notes; Calculating target heart rate; Pre-assessment testing (height, weight, situps, pushups. BMI).

Friday: Opening-review vocab and muscles; Ch. 1 Notes; Introduction to the muscular system (worksheet and discussion); Complete pre-assessment items (Pacer, continue other assessments not completed); Writing prompt (class expectations, goals); Closing.

TUESDAY: Cooperative Learning Cards: Working in groups students will be given a card with a side A and a side B. Students will read each question on the card and answer the questions as a group using group discussion. Each group will write out their answers for each question on the card. Students may use their SmartPhones to research information concerning the reproduction system. Students will provide an age appropriate diagram explaining their response to each card. Students will use critical thinking and reasoning to answer the questions to the cards.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Health education in today’s school environment is charged with improving student’s understanding of basic health concepts and promotion of skills needed to take action in health promotion and disease prevention. Our Health classes help students develop those skills and the skills to improve their own health and the health of others.


KEY STANDARDS: STRAND: HS - Comprehensive health knowledge and skills - Maintaining good personal health - Health-enhancing behaviors.

  • H.S.1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
  • H.S.2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
  • H.S.3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Class notebook, loose leaf paper, writing utensils


CLASS EXPECTATIONS: You will be asked to approach this class with an open mind and a positive, cooperative attitude.


Ø  You should be on time to class, prepared for participation, and cooperation. Good group participation demands that you be a good listener, as each member has a right to be heard.

Ø  You will be expected to keep a notebook for the class. All handouts, homework and class work will be placed in this notebook.  You will have notebook checks periodically for a grade.

Ø  You will need to bring your notebook and writing materials every day even though much of what goes on in class will be discussions. Also, all films will be followed by a quiz or written assignment on the material in the film.

Ø  You will be allowed to make up work only for excused absences. No late work will be accepted. It’s the student’s responsibility to make-up all written and skill-based assignments within one week of his/her excused absence. Absences including field trips, visitations, sickness, pre-arranged meetings need to be made up to receive credit. Refer to the Make-up Policy in the Student Handbook.

Ø  The final exam will be comprehensive and will cover all material received during the class.

Ø  Cell phones, I-pods, or any other electronic devices are not to be exposed or used during class time.

·         Any time an electronic device is seen or heard during the school day disciplinary actions noted in the student handbook will be followed. Refer to page 26 of the student handbook.

LATE WORK POLICY: Late work will not be accepted unless prior approval is given by the instructor.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Our goal is to reduce risk behaviors and increase healthy habits which will promote strong bonds between students and their families, schools, and community. This will be achieved through the students’ increased health literacy, the development of healthy self-management skills, and through the advocacy of their healthy behaviors and practices. The acquisition of these will be undertaken in active, student-centered, non-threatening environments in which students are challenged to do their best in developing the foundation of healthy, life-long habits.
